Why We Spend Two Nights in Cortona on Our 12-Day Italy Journey

Hillside houses in Cortona beside a curving road, with the valley beyond.
Cortona and the surrounding Tuscan countryside.

The morning after you arrive in Cortona, your suitcase can stay where it is.

You have a full independent day, followed by another evening in the same Tuscan hill town. There is time to explore according to your interests, rather than fit everything into a brief stop. On a journey through Italy’s celebrated cities, that is a useful kind of freedom.

Our 12-Day Signature Italy places two nights in Cortona between Florence and Rome. You arrive after a day exploring Tuscany, spend the next day according to your interests, and continue to Rome on Day 7. The second night gives you time to make Cortona part of your journey, rather than simply a stop along the way.

Florence offers an extraordinary concentration of art, architecture and history. Cortona brings a different rhythm to the journey between Florence and Rome, with time to experience the Tuscan countryside more personally. The full independent day leaves room to enjoy Cortona or pursue your own interests, with your Tour Captain available to help you consider the possibilities.

What the second night makes possible

Two nights mean an arrival day and one full day at leisure, not two full days of scheduled sightseeing.

That distinction matters when you compare itineraries. An overnight stay gives you dinner and an evening in a place. A second night gives you the intervening day to explore. You can arrive, get your bearings and then decide what deserves more of your time.

Perhaps you want to return to a street you noticed on the first evening, linger over lunch or leave the afternoon open. You do not need to fill every hour to make good use of being here.

Day 5 brings you through Tuscany to Cortona

The published itinerary leaves Florence for a day that includes San Gimignano, a wine-estate visit with a cellar tour and tasting, and an included luncheon. Later, we continue to Cortona.

Your Tour Captain handles hotel check-in and leads a Discovery Walk into the historic center. Our Cortona welcome dinner follows that evening. You have an introduction to the town and time with your fellow travelers before the independent day ahead.

By evening, you have an introduction to Tuscany and a base from which to enjoy the next day at your own pace.

Day 6 leaves the choices with you

Your Tour Captain can help you consider what suits your interests. You decide how much to take on.

You might spend time in the piazzas, explore more of the town or plan a museum visit. Cortona’s Etruscan history gives the curious traveler a reason to look beyond the view; Visit Tuscany’s town guide offers an introduction to that history.

These are possibilities for your own day, not included excursions. Check opening hours, arrangements and admission costs before setting out. Optional experiences cost extra; if one interests you, ask us to consider it in your proposal.

The evening is open, too. Your Tour Captain may invite you to an optional dinner, or you can make your own plans. Breakfast is included; other meals on this leisure day are additional. You can choose company when you want it and time to yourself when you prefer.

A Tuscan pause within a larger journey

Signature Italy spends two nights in Venice, two in Florence, two in Cortona, three in Rome and two in Sorrento. Across 12 days and 11 nights, there are transfers, guided visits and active days. Cortona gives that route a change of rhythm, with one full day to follow your own interests.

You still have the support of a dedicated Tour Captain throughout the journey, with specialist local guides for the visits described in the itinerary. Groups are typically 8–12 guests, with a maximum of 16. You can share the broader journey without needing to spend every hour following the same plan.

Finding your kind of Italy

If you enjoy guided cultural visits and also want time to make your own choices, this balance is worth considering. If you prefer a full schedule of included activities every day, look closely at the independent days before deciding.

Cortona is a hill town. The wider journey includes cobblestones, stairs and standing during visits, so an open day does not make the trip step-free. Tell us about your walking preferences and mobility needs so we can discuss the fit before you book.

Classic, Deluxe and the Lotus Hotel Collection offer different accommodation choices while sharing the same itinerary and included experiences. Review the Hotel Collections and ask which hotels and room categories apply to your proposal.

If a full day to find your own way in Cortona sounds like the Tuscany you have in mind, request a Journey Proposal. Tell us you are interested in 12-Day Signature Italy, your preferred dates, travel party and hotel collection, and how you like to balance guided visits with independent time. We will help you consider the right fit and confirm availability.
