FIRST THINGS FIRST: Consider our Flight and Early Arrival Options
Your flight to Nice, France should land on Day 1 of the itinerary - this means that you should depart your home airport the day prior - your round-trip travel time on this Journey is 13 Days (12 Days, 11 Nights Land). The trip ends in Lyon. Airfare is not included. Inquire about our Business Class and Premium Economy Airfare.

Many of our travelers arrive a “full day early” to recover from their overnight flight to Nice. Inquire for details. Our trip ends in Lyon. You can extend your trip with a pre-tour or post-tour - perhaps to Paris, the Loire Valley or Normandy.

The Journey begins on the Cote d’Azur (Blue Coast) of France also known as the French Riviera. After enjoying its beauty for 3 days, we travel west further into Provence to the picturesque hill towns to the charming town of St. Rémy where we make our home at the Journey Slow Travel Concept Private Villa. After 5 days and nights of enchantment in Provence, we travel via the TGV rapid train to our 3 night finalé in Lyon - known for its Gastronomy and interesting history.


Day-by-Day Itinerary

DAY 1: WELCOME TO THE FRENCH RIVIERA
Your Journey begins in Nice. Upon arrival, make your way to the hotel with our included transfer and enjoy leisure time until our afternoon activity and evening reception and dinner.

Reminder regarding French Currency - It's always a good idea to have some local currency with you upon arrival. You can also access more cash with your ATM card. You may also use a credit card in most stores and shops.

Discovery WalkDiscovery Walk: Nice
Meet your Journey Tour Director at the hotel for an introductory walk through Nice. We stroll along the Promenade des Anglais and enjoy the magnificent Mediterranean coast. Then we wander through the winding cobblestone streets of the Old Town (Vieille Ville) with its unique shops. We visit Place Massena, the main square of the city and will see the Neo-Gothic Basilica of Notre Dame de Nice.

Walking on Your Journey
We enjoy walking the cobblestone streets and stairs of France so be prepared to explore the cities and villages by foot. Plan to be on your feet for up to 3 hours while we explore. It is also necessary to be able to climb steps onto our coaches and other vehicles. Our pace is unhurried but you must be physically capable of walking.

Tonight join your Tour Director for a special Welcome Reception where we toast the beginning of our journey together. Then we proceed to dinner to enjoy traditional French cuisine. Journey’s approach to dining is unique in the travel world. We dine in small, family-owned restaurants with regional dishes. We include Premium Beverages (wine, cocktails, soft drinks) and you choose your dinner from the menu. French chefs and their staff are proud of their delicious regional dishes and while in France we will enjoy locally grown produce where the concept is available.

DAY 2: ST. PAUL DE VENCE, EZE SIGHTSEEING EXPLORATION
After a delicious breakfast (included table service or buffet; continental breakfast in Classic hotel), we board our comfortable micro-coach for the short drive to St Paul de Vence, one of the oldest medieval towns in the Alpes-Maritime Department.

St. Paul de Vence is picturesque hill town known as a haven for the famous including writers, artists and actors. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample one of the best-known Provençal pastries, the Sacristain. We complete our hill town exploration today with a visit to Eze, first populated around 2000 BC near Mount Bastide. Its hilltop location made it an important stronghold fortification in the 14th century. The narrow cobblestone streets are filled with interesting shops full of local crafts. Eze is famous worldwide for its Jardin Botanique (botanical garden) which is filled with succulents,cacti and sculptures and it offers unparalleled views of the Mediterranean coast.

We return to our hotel for the balance of the day at leisure.

DAY 3: EXCURSION ALONG THE MEDITERRANEAN COAST

Sightseeing IconToday's Adventure: Discovering the Coast
Enjoy a special experience aboard a yachting vessel as we enjoy the Cote d’Azur from the sea. We will pass some of the best-known towns and villages, such as Villefranche-sur-Mer, St. Tropez, Saint-Jean-Cap, appealing to those who enjoy “the good life.”

We return to our hotel for the balance of the day at leisure. This afternoon, you might wish to visit the Paul Cézanne Museum or the Old Port of Nice. Be sure to stroll through the Cours Saleya Market to enjoy the beautiful flowers and food. Try Socca, the traditional street food of Nice.

DAY 4: TO PROVENCE
This morning we say Au Revoir to Nice as we make our way to the heart of Provence and arrive at the Journey Slow Travel Concept Villa - a private villa just for Journey guests featuring air-conditioned, ensuite guest rooms, full estate, Chef-prepared dining, swimming pool and other amazing amenities. Along the way, we will visit the classic Provençal town, Aix-en-Provence, birthplace of Paul Cézanne. We stroll along the renowned boulevard, Cours Mirabeau,lined with plane trees and perhaps sample the traditional Provencal beverage,Pastis.

DAY 5: PROVENCE SIGHTSEEING EXPLORATION

Sightseeing IconToday's Adventure: Pont-du-Gard and Chateauneuf-du-Pape
PONT-DU-GARD
After breakfast we board our comfortable coach and make our way to one of the best-preserved aqueduct bridges in the world. Pont du Gard crosses the Gardon River near the village of Vers-Pont-du-Gard. It is part of the 31 mile Nimes aqueduct which was constructed during the 1st century AD to carry water from a spring near Uzès to Nimes. It has remained largely intact and is a marvel of engineering which was open to vehicle traffic until the 1980s.

CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
We will continue our journey just north of Avignon into Chateauneuf-Du-Pape for an exploration of this renowned wine-growing area. Located in Vaucluse, it is both a village and an area of land that features the ruins of a 14th century medieval castle. The castle was built for Pope John XXII, the second of the popes who resided in Avignon. The region is famous for the production of red wine and almost all the cultivable land is planted with grapevines.

DAY 6: ENJOYING THE VILLA TODAY

Enjoy a relaxing morning at the villa with all of its amenities. Throughout the morning and early afternoon, our shuttle will be available to take you to Saint Rémy.

This afternoon we visit Avignon where we will see the Papal Palace - the Pope’s residence during the 14th century eighty-year Avignon Papacy. We will see the renowned Pont d’Avignon (Avignon Bridge), subject of one of the most popular French nursery rhymes and songs. You will have free time to visit the shops or stroll along the city ramparts.

DAY 7: PROVENCE SIGHTSEEING EXPLORATION

Sightseeing IconToday's Adventure:  Les Baux de Provence
The village of Les Baux is located on a rocky outcrop of the Alpilles mountain range a short distance from St. Rémy. It boasts a spectacular view of the surrounding valley and features the ruins of a 14th century castle. After visiting the castle and village, we visit Carriéres de Lumières to experience the unique art-based multimedia exhibit in a former limestone quarry.

We return to the villa for the balance of the day at leisure.

DAY 8: OPT FOR A MORNING IN ISLE-SUR-LA-SORGUE
This morning optionally visit L’Isle-Sur-La-Sorgue. This island city combines canals and narrow streets surrounded by the Sorgue river with its waterwheels. It is known for antique dealers, flea markets and art galleries. After strolling through the village, enjoy a pastry in one of the many cafés.

Return to the hotel early afternoon for an afternoon at leisure before our Farewell to Provence dinner.

DAY 9: OUR TRAIN JOURNEY TO LYON
After breakfast we make our way to the Avignon TGV station for our express journey to Lyon. Upon arrival we transfer to our hotel in the heart of the city, freshen up and join our Tour Director for a Discovery Walk.

Optimally situated at the confluence of the Rhõne and Saõne rivers, the city has been an important center of trade for centuries.

DAY 10: LYON SIGHTSEEING EXPLORATION

After breakfast, meet our local expert guide for a walking and driving tour of the city. We will visit Vieux Lyon, the Old Town, on foot and stroll through the unique passageways. . We will tour Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière which is located at the highest point of the city and affords spectacular views of the city and rivers.

After the tour we return to the hotel or explore more of Lyon at your leisure. Tonight, join your Journey Tour Director for an optional dinner or enjoy exploring at your leisure.

DAY 11: DAY AT LEISURE
Enjoy today at leisure in Lyon. You might consider a visit to Les Halles Paul Bocuse or one of the silk specialty shops. Be sure to taste the Lyonnaise pastries of praline with pink sugar. This afternoon, enjoy leisure time before our Farewell event.

We say Au Revoir to to the Treasures of France Tour this morning. Perhaps an extension to Paris is in order?

You can fly from Lyon international airport to connect to your transatlantic flight or take the 2 hour TGV directly to Charles de Gaulle airport for your flight. You can also consider the train to central Paris for a special extension in the City of Lights.
